Ralf schaute auf den Puppenwagen. «Wer hat dich denn so zugerichtet?»
Der Wagen lag rücklings auf der Werkbank, und Ralf drehte mit dem Zeigefinger das linke Hinterrad. Es eierte. Bei jeder Umdrehung hob es sich ein Stück und kam wieder herunter, und Ralf summte falsch dazu.
Die Lampe über der Werkbank hing so tief, wie sein Vater sie gebraucht hatte, und Ralf zog darunter den Kopf ein, ohne es zu merken. In den Rillen seiner Finger sass Holzstaub, der beim Waschen nie ganz herausging. Es roch nach Leinöl und Sägespänen. Die Heizung hatte er nicht angestellt, weil er nur kurz bleiben wollte, und er arbeitete in der Jacke.
Ein Vater hatte den Wagen am Donnerstag kurz vor Ladenschluss gebracht. Es eile nicht, hatte er gesagt, seine Tochter sei eigentlich zu gross dafür. Er hatte ihn trotzdem in beiden Armen hereingetragen und beim Abstellen das Verdeck geradegezogen. Darum lag der Wagen jetzt hier, am Tag der Deutschen Einheit, einem Samstag, an dem der Laden zu war.
Die Hinterachse hatte einen Knick. Jemand hatte sie mit einer Kombizange geradebiegen wollen, und wo die Zange gesessen hatte, fühlte Ralf mit der Daumenkuppe eine Kante.
«Wenn ich dich zurückbiege», sagte er zu der Achse, «brichst du mir beim nächsten Mal genau da.»
Sein Vater hatte ihm das an dieser Bank gezeigt, mit einem Stück Blumendraht. Er hatte den Draht hin und her gebogen, bis er beim fünften Mal in zwei Teile brach, und Ralf hatte die Bruchstelle anfassen dürfen. Sie war warm gewesen.
